Homestead Exemption Eligibility Checker by State
Answer four questions to see which statewide homestead and property tax relief programs you may qualify for, from official state sources. This is a screening tool, not a decision.
Assumptions we make
- Programs come from our 59 verified statewide programs; each links to its official source. County and city programs aren't included.
- Programs open to all owner-occupants are shown to everyone who owns and lives in the home.
- Senior programs are shown if you are 65 or older, the most common age in state rules. Some states use other ages (for example 61 or 62); read "Who qualifies" for the exact rule.
- Veteran and disability programs are shown if you tick those boxes. Ratings and proof rules vary.
- Income-based programs are shown with a note to check the income limit; we don't apply limits automatically because they change yearly and depend on how the state counts income.
Disclaimer: This is general information, not legal or tax advice, and not an application. Your county assessor or state agency decides eligibility. Filing is free.
Who qualifies for a homestead exemption?
Generally an owner who lives in the home as their main residence. Many states add larger exemptions for seniors, veterans and people with disabilities.
Is this checker an application?
